Thumbs.db FAQ

Q. How can I find a thumbs.db file?
A. Thumbs.db files are found in Windows XP computers and earlier. You can find them in any folder where the contents of that folder have been displayed as thumbnails.

Q. I cannot see any thumbs.db files?
A. Thumbs.db is a hidden file and by default cannot be seen in a folder. You can enable the viewing of hidden files in Windows Explorer by using Folder Options under the Tools menu. Click on the View tab and select 'Show hidden files and folders' and also make sure that 'Hide protected operating system files is also unchecked.

Q. How can I stop thumbnails being stored?
A. Open Windows Explorer and go to Folder Options under the Tools menu. Click on the View tab and select 'Do not cache thumbnails'.

Q. Why are all the images small in my thumbs.db file?
A. Thumbs.db files store thumbnails up to a maximum size of 96 x 96 unlike Vista thumbcaches which can store thumbnails as large as 1024 x 1024.

Q. Why does Windows use thumbs.db files?
A. By caching thumbnail images Windows can re-use these images each time a folder is viewed as thumbnails and therefore it speeds up their display.
